Norman Perkins of Palm Springs knew his 14-year-old Welsh springer spaniel was edging close to death. After a series of strokes, Cora would stand in one place for hours, staring at the wall. Perkins, heartbroken, made the difficult decision to put his beloved dog down. But still wanting to always have his dog near, Perkins contacted Pet Passages by Wiefels in Palm Springs. As a result, Cora was cremated — her ashes are in a keepsake box Perkins said he cherishes. “Cora’s still here,” he said.

Pet cremation by mournful pet owners is a growing nationwide trend. Pet Passages is one of two pet cremation services that have opened in the Coachella Valley in the past year — among more than 500 businesses providing such services nationwide. “I think we’ll see that number double each year over the next five or six years,” said Bill McQueen.
